Resum

Vertebral fracture are the most prevalent osteoporotic fractures in women and men, yet they are currently underdiagnosed because their manifestations are nonspecific. In addition, vertebral fractures evident on radiological images requested for other diseases are occasionally not reported. A conventional radiological study with anteroposterior and lateral X-rays of the dorsal and lumbar spine is standard practice. On these X-rays, a vertebral morphometry is performed using the Genant scale. Other diagnostic procedures include morphometry based on densitometric images (vertebral fracture assessment), computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The main differential diagnosis is made between an acute or subacute osteoporotic fracture and a neoplastic fracture. A set of radiological signs is useful for differentiating both diseases.
