Resumo

We offer the biography of Benito Hernando Espinosa and his performance as a teacher and as an academic. We highlight its efforts to consolidate the dermatology specialty, and get a professorship at the University of Madrid, which could not get. Despite this, he deserves to be remembered for his major work: De la lepra en Granada. This paper was one of the first studies on leprosy in his time, worldwide. To carry out the work, apart from the general secondary literature, mainly in digital format, we used various university archives, official gazettes, the press of the time and published articles and books about him. Also we used a copy of De la lepra en Granada for commentary of the work.
