Resumo

The functional explanation of the marginal corrugation of ammonoid septa is a challenge given the lack of extant representatives and hence the impossibility of direct experimentation on them. For this reason, the lines of evidence must be based on comparisons of ammonites with other extant cephalopods. Here, we study the ontogenetic allometries of septal area on phragmocone volume for a set of cephalopods with spiral shells (internal or external) and the intertaxonic allometry for Late Jurassic adult ammonoids. Ammonoid septa are very similar to other cephalopod septa at early ontogenetic stages. Conversely, the allometric coefficient for adult ammonoids shows that the septal complexity is not achieved by simple ontogenetic scaling.
