Resumen

The Granada basin is a Neogene basin loeated in the central sector o f the Betic Cordillera, between External Zones and Internal Zones. In the Neogene infilling two phases have been recognized: a marine phase (lasting until latest Tortonian) and a continental phase (extending from the latest Tortonian until present time). This paper deals with the continental record of the Tortonian-Messinian transition in the Jun-Viznar section. The sediments in this section are basically sands, silts and clays; conglomerates are less frequent. These sediments come from the dismantling of the Nevado-Fildbride Sierra Nevada core basement. The socalled "Limos y arenas de Cenes-Jun" represent a fluvio-lacustrine system. Micrommamals are very abundant in these sediments, and have been used for dating and for paleoeeological and paleoclimatological interpretations. The section is correlated with the Crevillente section in Alicante and with other sections from Almería. Apparently climatic conditions in these three areas were quite similar and comparable to nowadays conditions in Southern Spain.
