«The Islamic garden and its symbolism». The presence of the garden as an image of paradise responds to a universal idea which was widespread, above all, among oriental peoples and monotheist religions. The Islamic garden is, therefore, a metaphor of the Islamic Paradise. This paper deals with trees, fountains, rivers and some other regular elements in nature which Mahomet saw in his Ascension to Heaven. Some of them are rooted in the Koran and others derive either from exegetical or popular traditions. Many accounts regarding Paradise were first broadcasted by particular tellers who intended to convey these stories to the people, thus fostering the possibility of exaggerations which would nourish versions quite different from the original sources.
