Objectives: To determine the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in women prostitutes in Almería and its relation to the existence of risk behaviors, in order to establish preventive interventions aimed at this group. Methods: Cross-sectional study of 90 women involved with prostitution in Almeria during the years 2010- 2012. We studied the following variables: country of origin, age, risk behaviors and the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections. Sources of Information: microbiology records and laboratory samples, and an ad hoc questionnaire. Results: 88.9% of women were immigrants, mostly of Eastern Europe. Average age was 31 years. Most common positive serology was the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Regarding serology hepatitis B virus (HBV), 50% of the total did not have the surface antibody, protector of this virus infection. The most common infection in the exudate was caused by Trichomonas vaginalis (7%). The most common practice in the last week was: vaginal and oral penetration in the same service (85.6%). In the last week the condom was used 98.9% of vaginal penetrations. A 55.6% of women reported having had a condom break at some point of their activity in prostitution. The condom breakage generated in those who had undergone it a risk to have a pathological vaginal discharge 1.86 (95% CI: 1.147 to 3.042) times higher than those who had not suffered it. Conclusions: Female sex workers in Almería are mostly immigrants, with a low prevalence of sexually transmitted infections. We must continue to insist on the proper use of condoms and the HBV vaccination as key preventive measures
