Abstract
This article examines the effects of Spanish saving bank mergers on their costs, profits, level of service, prices and solvency. The results show that the methods generally usedto predict the effects of mergers have a limited validity for the study of the Spanish case. The most significant favourable effects for the savings banks have been seen in terms of solvency rather than in greater efficiency. The study concludes that although both the users and the actual savings banks themselves may havebenefited from the mergers in some aspects, the direction of certain of these effects is variable.
