Abstract

: This paper presents examines the equivalents of the Spanish preposition hacia, considered within the spatiality, in the Portuguese, Polish and English languages. We try to demonstrate that the semantics of the prepositions of a language cannot be translated into others because of designative coincidence (identity or similarity of the situations expressed by the signs) but has to be extended compulsorily to all the cases in which all the semantic values will be possible and in which the intuition that perceives the unit embraces all its use. Adapting the methodology of M. Morera Pérez that determines discernment of the semantic features of the prepositions in a very detailed manner, we classify the different types of the contexts in which the preposition hacia may appear, so that it would be possible to determine the essential unit of the sign against its extraordinary intricate variety and its polysemic complexity. Starting from the prepositional corpus in the four different languages, based on the lexicographic entries, we have tried to show the subtleness of the semantic changes and to underline that these represent alterations of the forms of the content and not of the use of the prepositions. After analyzing the equivalents that different dictionaries, both bilingual and monolingual, suggest, we pay attention to the proposals "filling in" this empty lexical field that involves the absence of the preposition hacia in Portuguese and in Polish, as well as analyze the semantic correspondence of its respective English equivalents
