Abstract

The starting point of The EVA foam doll is an anecdote lived by one the authors of this paper. The work reveals clue issues about the gap between art and society analysing the reasons why the normal viewer rejects contemporary art, searching for the roots of the problem and trying to localize the exact breaking point. Three core issues are found to understand the gap between the spectator and Art: The spectator emotional and conceptual confusion: the paper analyses how the viewer searches for a known emotion when confronting art, reading the piece from itself rather than from what is being read; The blind spectator: as a figure that chooses not to think about what he or she is looking at; a figure that decides to avoid the knowledge displayed before him or her; The absolute judgement: the paper explores the reasons why a blind spectator should feel confident enough to issue a judgement about something he is avoiding to think of.
