Abstract

The analysis of individual and joint performance in the sports environment is a topic treated both from the point of view of the amateur and the professionals of sports entities. For this reason, there are numerous indexes focused on this goal although there is no unanimity on the most appropriate index. This paper proposes a new methodology to analyze the performance based on the fulfillment of previously established criteria. Thus, is obtained information on each game/season for the management of players during the season or hiring/firing players at the end of it. It is also possible to compare players with different roles within a team. The contribution of this methodology is empirically illustrated by the construction of two indexes, the first to measure the individual performance of basketball players and the second to measure the defense of a team. This information can be used by the coach to improve the performance of the players and a team.
