Abstract

The field of security and defence studies has undergone significant development in Spain in recent decades. An important factor in this growth has been the work produced by the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies. Both facts raise the question about issues and authorships addressed in its papers. For this purpose a descriptive analysis is carried out of nearly 700 documents published by the Institute between 2011 and 2020. It analyzes: issues, geographical areas and authorships, distributed on the one hand between civilians and military, and on the other between men women. The results show a priority interest in the changes in the international order and new types of conflicts (for example: «hybrid wars»). However, under the heading of «security and defence» a very wide range of issues can be observed, giving rise to a very diverse agenda. Finally, there is a balance between civilian and military (albeit with different thematic preferences) and it shows a clear majority of male over female authors.
