Résumé

We present a descriptive study on the oral health status of 70 elderly individuals institutionalized in a private old people's home. The aims were as to determine their oral health and hygiene and the prevalence of periodontal disease, as well the need, condition and hygiene of the prosthesis . WHO recommendations and criteria for suruey data obtention were followed, and the Silness and Löe index for oral and prosthesis hygiene, together with the Budtz-jogersen criteria for determination of prosthetic needs, were adopted. In the sample, 48.6% of patients were edentulous; the patients with teeth the mean number of teetb was 7.74; half of the sample bad root remains in the mouth. Regarding CPITN, code 2 was the most frequent, and there was a high prevalence (62%) of gingival recessions. Sorne type of caries was presented in 75% of patients; 62% had a poor oral hygiene, 58% did not brush their teeth, and 78% required tartrectomy. Poorly fitting and mobile prostheses were found in 60% of the individuals with poor occlusion in 31.4%. A lower partial prosthesis was necessary in 27.7%, an upper partial prosthesis in 19.5% anda complete upper prosthesis in 17. 6% of the sample.
