Abstract

The location of Ipolcobulcula in Carcabuey (under castle hill) is a widely accepted conclusion. Studies based on surface evidence show that the site was first occupied in the Bronze Age, later becoming an Iberian-period oppidum which eventually acquired the status of a Roman municipium, as attested by epigraphic sources. However, until today, the existence of archaeological structures from that phase was unknown. This paper presents a series of building elements from the Early Imperial period, recognised during an archaeological excavation carried out between January and April 2019, which suggest the abandonment of this area during the Flavian Period.
