Abstract

The aim of the present study is to analyse a number of morphometric parameters extracted from multibeam echosounder data. In particular, we focus on the morphometric analysis of 8 prodeltaic undulations fields found on the continental shelf of the northern margin of the Alboran Sea. Those morphometric parameters have been related to the marked seasonal behaviour of the hydrological regime of the studied rivers. The results show a clear connection between the undulation fields and the inland water courses, as the origin of the undulations is influenced by the fluvial sediment load. In addition, the undulations associated to the longer rivers (and with the larger catchment areas) are further developed than those located on prodeltaic bodies associated to minor rivers and streams. This fact could be possibly explained by considering different sedimentation rates on the shelf.
