Abstract

Pollen quality is a useful parameter for agrobiological studies, which includes both the viability and the capacity of the pollen grain to germinate. In the case of the olive (Olea europaea L.) pollen, such parameter is of particular interest for the selection of pollen donor cultivars. In this work we have compared several methods to evaluate the quality of pollen, including: a) trypan blue staining, b) the fluorochromatic reaction of the fluorescein diacetate, and c) the germination ability of pollen in vitro. The results obtained indicate that the two latter methods were the most effective to estimate olive pollen quality, and allowed us to classify the cultivars studied according to their pollinating potential.
