Abstract

Six glasses in the Na20-Ti02-Si02 system with TÍO2 content ranging from 0 to 30 mol %were prepared. The samples were characterized thermal, chemical and mechanically. The structural and microstructural study were carried out by means of infrared spectroscopy (IR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Thermal expansion coefficients of the glasses prepared are smaller than those of silicate glasses, while alkaline resistance is higher. Mechanical properties, refractive index and phase separation size are enhanced by the introduction of TÍO2. As IR spectroscopy indicates, Ti'^^ ions are located in octahedral environments [TÍO5] as a network modifier.
