Abstract

First data about bulk and clay mineralogy of mid-cretaceous clayey sediments (“tegulinas”) of the Internal Prebetic are presented. These materials contain 25%-50% of phyllosilicates (smectites, illite, kaolinite, random illite-smectite and lesser quantities of palygorskite), 5%-30% quartz, 20-65% calcite, <10% of felspars, dolomite and gypsum. Severals facts such as the clear detritic origin of clay minerals, the vertical variation of their proportion along the sequence and the degree of crystallinity of smectites and illite lead us to distinguish four cicles which represent climatic and tectonic changes in the cretaceous paleocontinent.
