Soil is an essential for life in our planet. Anthropogenic practices such as the construction of transport infrastructure and wrong agricultural practices cause serious problems of erosion and loss of soil. In this regard, the use of leguminous plants has been shown to help to recover eroded, degraded, unfertile soils. Legumes are special among the higher plants because their ability to establish nitrogen-fixing symbioses with diazotrophic bacteria, thereby providing fixed nitrogen to the soil. Here we revised the methodology and type of legumes that can be used depending on the characteristic of the soil to be restored. In addition, other bioengineer- ing techniques employed in environmental restoration are presented
