Abstract

Horror as a genre in popular culture is often hybridized with humor, either in comedies that use elements typical to the horror genre as their subject matter, or in horror tales which add humorous elements in order to enrich their texture or adjust their impact. This paper proposes a typology of such hybrids, based on the proportion of elements from each genre, and ventures a theory on the combination of humor and horror in their respective varieties of register from the standpoint of the phenomenological sociology of humor.
