Abstract

The present report describes a diagnosed case of anaplasmosis in theregion of Matarraña (Teruel, Spain). Animals showed unspecific andchronic symptoms, along them there were weakness, anorexia, severeanemia, progressive weight loss, conjunctivitis and sometimes abortionsand limp. This was happening mainly in 1 to 3 years old sheep. Three“Rasa Aragonesa” ewes were sent to the Small Ruminant Service ofthe Veterinary Faculty of Zaragoza (SCRUM), due to the progressivelyhigh impact and economic losses in order to obtain a diagnosis. Afterseveral negative suspicions, the definitive diagnosis was achieved thankyou to an unexpected find. One urine analysis turned out to be brownreddishcolored, what made us think of some hemolytic microorganismwas causing all symptoms. Finally, intraerythrocyte bodies observedin a blood smear and a positive qPCR confirmed our final diagnosis ofAnaplasma ovis. Once known the agent, an experimental treatment withDoxycycline was established. It proved that Doxycycline could be selectedas antibiotic treatment in front of this process. Nowadays, this illness isstill being studied both in farms as at experimental research level.
