Abstract

The great modernization of transport infrastructures in Spain in the second half of the 19th century were posible thanks in part to technical regulation of Civil Works’ construction. And the design of standardized patterns for the most common constructions was one of its most relevant demonstrations. The design of the original buildings called “casillas de peones camineros” emerged at that time to provide housing to the roads maintenance workers. Its technical pattern was made in 1859. A large number of these houses were built from then well into the 20th century. This paper focuses on the historic context of this architectonical experience. Its main constructive and funcionality characteristics are also analysed. At the same time its implementation on the Spanish southeast coast, along the ancient road that led from the city of Málaga to Almeria, will be studied.
