Abstract

Between 1578-1580, Juan Vázquez de Vega finished one of the most outstanding baldachin altarpieces of Andalusian Mannerism: the baldachin of the Santa Maria de Antequera Collegiate, today housed in the San Pedro Parish in the same city. Although the historical events surrounding the piece are perfectly documented, nothing exists concerning the source of its inspiration, a question that has not been addressed by specialized critics. Traditionally, its sources of inspiration have been considered to be Italian in origin, citing different examples as precedents. In this work, we intend to reveal the relationship between the art piece and the artistic treaties of the XVI century.
