Resum

The aim of this research is to know if living conditions have an impact on the development of long-term professional care for elderly people in Spain (residence for the elderly, day centre, home help). The period 1999/2012 is analyzed, the start and development of modern social services, by using a predictive model of data panel, which combines the annual information with the transversal character of data distributed by each Autonomous Community. The variables with positive coefficient which represented the development of the GDP, the absence of studies, the solitude of the elderly person as well as the residence in a rural area were significant. With negative coefficient, the disposable income and the indicator of foreign people in Spain were also significant. Likewise, having estimated a panel model of fixed effects in the temporary variable, we could notice some structural changes which occurred from the beginning of the statistical series. In this way, years 2001 (first effects of planning), 2005/2006 (growth after the Dependency White Paper) and 2010/2012 (stagnation and return to 2008/2009) are highlighted.
