In this paper we analyse the Shulman's teacher knowledge model and some adaptations and interpretations of it developed by different authors in the field of mathematics teacher education. After identifying some limitations in these models we propose a model that includes more detailed categories of analysis for mathematics and didactics teachers' knowledge, based on the application of the onto-semiotic approach to mathematical knowledge and instruction. We also describe a guideline to formulate questions to assess such knowledge based on the proposed model. These new categories can be used by the teachers as tools to analyse and reflect on their own practice.
