Resum

This article reviews the genesis, preparation and development of the first marathon at the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, refering to basic data on Michel Bréal, who had the initial idea. The difficulties involved in the preparation of the route and its differences compared to Pheidippides' in 490 BC. The amazing selection trials made by the Hellenic Olympic Committee to elect their candidates. The story and legend women who unofficially ran the marathon. The event organization and its participants. The official narration at that time and the awards ceremony. The text ends with an account of Spiridon Louis about his own experiences in the race and his stay at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936.
