Abstract
Dysphagia can be defined as difficulty in swallowing. Depending on the location of the problem it can be classified into two major types: high (oropharyngeal) or low (esophageal). This article will present an overview of esophageal dysphagia including its etiology, classification, and supplementary tests for its assessment. With a focus on motor dysfunction, esophageal motility disorders and the different classifications according to the chosen manometric technique will be highlighted. Different therapeutic approaches and a proposed diagnostic algorithm for dysphagia will also be discussed.
