Abstract
We present a series of topics dedicated to chronic functional constipation in adults. In this first issue, the concept of chronic constipation is defined according to the criteria of Rome IV. A brief epidemiological review of a problem that affects up to 16% of the general population is carried out, with the possibility of reaching much higher figures if we look at older and institutionalised patients. The physiopathological mechanisms involved in chronic constipation and the classification into functional disorders of defecation, slow transit through the colon and normal colonic transit are described
