Resumo

PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) constitute a group of drugs used to suppress acid secretion whose consumption has skyrocketed worldwide due to their consideration as gastric protectants. In fact, they are listed among the most commonly used drugs by population, resulting in significant health costs and a potential health risk. Despite extensive experience with their use, they are not free of side effects, some of them severe, which makes it necessary to assure appropriate prescription and to withdraw treatment when not medically indicated. It is the gastroenterologist's responsibility to make doctors and patients aware of this need. This consensus document by the Andalusian Group of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders aims to contribute to this goal.
