Abstract

Several electrophysiological, histopathologic and enzymatic parameters are studied in hens treated with neuropathic doses of tri-o-cresyl phosphate (TOCP), alone and in different combinations with the protective agent phenylmetanesulphonylíluoride (PMSF). Electrophysiologic parameters (onset conduction velocity, peak conduction velocity, action potential duration and action potential amplitude) were monitorized at 0,7,14 and 21 days after intoxication with TOCP and/or PMSF. After killing, samples of sciatic nerve were taken for histological and enzymatic ((3- glucuronidase and acid phosphatase) studies. Noelectrophysiological changes were observed in any group oftreatment. Ttiisfact agrees with histopathologic and enzy matic findings. Plasma acid phosphatase undergoes a delayed increase 21 days after intoxication withTOCP. Therefore, its usefulness as an early waming index to detect peripheral neuropathy due to over exposure to neurotoxic organophosphorus compounds is doubtful.
