Abstract

Social networks are increasingly used to disseminate and access scientific information. As the largest group of users, adolescents and young adults are a key target audience because of the cognitive development and learning occurring at this stage of life, when the development of cognitive skills lays the foundations for the construction of more complex knowledge (Atkins et al., 2012). In this study, YouTube videos are analysed to explore knowledge transmission in the fields of mental health and infectious disease. A particular focus is placed on the role of emotional elements, such as colours and images that trigger certain emotions, in the linguistic and paralinguistic strategies used to transmit scientific content to adolescents and young adults.
