Abstract

Introduction. The injuries to the cervical spine are very rare in children. However, and due to the potential severity of the neurological damage and long term sequelae, a high index of suspicion is required in order to have an early diagnosis and the appropriate early treatment implemented. Case Report. Five cases of previously healthy children (18 months to 18 years of age) that sustained cervical spine injuries during the years 1994 and 1999 are reported. These cases illustrate the wide spectrum of etiologies and clinical presentations, as well as the different diagnostic methods, treatment and prognosis. Comments. The protocols for the management of patients with suspected spinal injury are reviewed. The correct immobilization of the cervical spine is a basic maneuver to be performed immediately after the accident. The pathogenesis of the injuries, the different diagnostic methods and medical and surgical treatments are reviewed. Finally, a reference is also made to the long-term sequelae and neurological outcome of patients sustaining a cervical spinal cord injury.
