Résumé

Our thesis aims to highlight the paradigm shift in the treatment of death and violence that occurs with the irruption of the movement called «New Hollywood» in the North American cinema between 1967 and 1980. For this, a quantitative analysis and a qualitative analysis have been carried out that support the starting hypothesis. The study methodology for the quantitative analysis has contemplated a statistical treatment through a data search engine of the American film production in the period of study 1967-1980, comparing it with data from earlier and later periods. Furthermore, the findings have been endorsed by means of a statistical hypothesis testing. For the qualitative analysis, a sample of 20 representative films of the New Hollywood has been characterized with scenes that place death as the core of the story, and a philosophical-conceptual study of the social sciences and education has been carried out. The results of the quantitative analysis have shown an effective increase in the production of films that dealt with death in the New Hollywood cinema with respect to previous times. In later times, film production around the theme of death continues to increase in Hollywood until the 1993-2005 period, where it begins to decline until the end date of this study (2018) below the production of the time of the New Hollywood. In addition, the qualitative analysis of a corpus of 20 selected films belonging to the filmography of this movement shows how the theme of death was approached in a unique, more complex and realistic way, compared to classic Hollywood films from earlier times
