Abstract
This paper analyses the pictures used to depict Africa in secondary schools textbooks. We are working on the assumption that, as with press and NGO pictures, those of textbooks are highly ethnocentric and welfarism and paternalism prevail in them. In this study we have relied on textbooks from publishing houses with a large market share, themost widely circulated newspapers according to the OJD (Oficina de Justificación de la Difusión, which keeps statistics of newspaper circulations) and some adverts from the most internationally renowned NGDOs. In conclusion, we can highlight the fact that textbooks still use pictures in which Africa is depicted as a defenceless continent and in need of external aid. Moreover, on several occasions textbooks use pictures from the NGOs themselves, which show close-ups of white people in a welfarist attitude or even the NGOs logos.
