Abstract

Introduction: The first study we have knowledge about the results of hemithyroidectomy in Major Ambulatory Surgery dates back to 1980 and defends the safety of the procedure in this modality. Since then, several studies have been published defending this surgical option. The aim of the present study was to analyze the results of outpatient hemithyroidectomy and compare them with those obtained in hospital. Methods: Prospective observational study analyzing 70 patients who underwent outpatient hemithyroidectomy from January 2019 to December 2020. These results were compared with those obtained in 70 other patients who underwent the same inpatient surgery between January 2017 and December 2020. Results: Of a total of 105 patients with an indication for partial thyroidectomy, 84 met the inclusion criteria of the AMC protocol. The overall substitution rate was 67% with an overall inclusion protocol applicability rate of 80% and an unwanted admission rate of 17%. No patient had major complications at home and no patient was readmitted in the week following surgery. For the calculation of the statistical difference in the rate of substitution, applicability and unwanted admission between 2019 and 2020, a statistically significant p-value of p. Conclusions: Outpatient hemithyroidectomy performed by expert surgeons is a feasible and safe procedure. Therefore, it should be part of the activity of AMC units, provided that there is a correct selection of patients.
