Abstract

Introduction: The initial comprehensive assessment of the polytraumatized patient is an orderly system of assessment and treatment (if applicable) that assumes that until one of the different steps has been resolved, it is not possible to proceed to the next one. Objective: The objective of the initial comprehensive evaluation of the polytrauma patient is to establish priorities in emergency medical care. Methodology: A narrative review of the latest scientific evidence from journals indexed in the Cochrane Library, Pubmed, Cuiden and Medine databases has been carried out. Results: The initial comprehensive evaluation of the polytrauma patient, also known as ABCDE, includes: A- Analysis and opening of the airway with control of the cervical spine. B- Analysis of respiration and ventilation. C- Analysis of circulation and control of external bleeding (if any). D- Analysis of the neurological state. E- Exposure of the patient’s injuries. Conclusion: Mortality in the first minutes is due to injuries incompatible with life, in the first hours and in the first days or weeks due to complications, which makes a comprehensive initial assessment of the polytraumatized patient essential.
