The imminent depletion of fossil fuels, the exponential increase in carbon dioxideemissions and global warming have prompted the scientific community to focusgreat attention on seeking sustainable and low-cost alternative energy resources.For this, the evolution of renewable energy conversion and storage devices suchas metal-air batteries, water electrolyzers and regenerative fuel cells requires thedevelopment of new bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and stability inreduction (ORR) and evolution (OER) oxygen reactions. In this work, a new mechanochemicalsynthesis route based on the use of multilayer graphenes functionalizedwith dipyridylpyridazine (dppz) units by Diels-Alder reaction for the coordinationof FeN4 active sites located specifically at the edges of the sheets has beencarried out. Once characterized in detail by different instrumental techniques, theelectrocatalytic performance of the resulting materials was evaluated in ORR andOER processes, showing excellent bifunctional behavior.
