Abstract

Spontaneous perforation of the esophagus is known as Boerhaave syndrome. In most cases, it occurs after forceful vomiting. Many patients present with atypical symptoms such as shock or respiratory distress, and Boerhaave syndrome is often misdiagnosed as pericarditis, myocardial infarction, or perforated ulcer. It is very important for any physician to have a high index of suspicion for the diagnosis of Boerhaave syndrome in any patient with vomiting and retrosternal pain. Most patients require surgical treatment, and only a minority can be considered for conservative management. We present the case of a patient who presented with chest pain and vomiting and discuss the clinical presentation and management of Boerhaave syndrome.
