Abstract

We performed a semiquantitative study of the subgingival microorganisms in patients diagnosed with periodontitis and impaired peripheral blood polymorphonuclear leukocyte adhesiveness and phagocytosis. The subjects were a group of four first degree relatives. Subgingival plaque was collected from at least four different sites on three occasions, with intervals of 20 days between samplings. W isolated a great number of different microorganisms, although only four, Prevotella, intermedia, Porphyromonas, gingivalis, Streptococcus milleeri y espirochetes, were found consistently in all subgingival pockets and in all patients. Microbiological analyses performed throughout the period of study showed that nearly all microorganisms isolated had stably colonized the pockets.
