This article describes the challenges that road engineering faces in the coming years, and how to respond to them through innovation. The most relevant ones come from the increase in traffic loads and the exposure to extreme weather events as a result of climate change. In addition, our roads are in an advanced degree of det erioration that requires urgent repair and,maintenance actions. The research carried out in recent decades on asphalt materials with high mechanical. sustainable. automated and intelligent performance is mature enough to be implemented on our roads in the coming years. Therefore, innovation through the transfer of these technologies is a great tool to respond to these challenges; this even facilitated economic resources for its implementation on Andalusian roads in the coming years.
