Abstract

Is it possible to communicate Geology throughout the year and, at the same time, make visible the role of women in this science? That is how Geocharlas emerged: a network of specialists in different geology branches spread throughout the Spa- nish geography that put their knowledge at the service of society through a public offer of activities (https://mujeresygeologia. wixsite.com/mujeresygeologia/geocharlas). Free talks, workshops and field trips that show Geology as a useful science for society. In addition, the large proportion of women (~60%) can bring current examples of female geologists to the classroom, which may constitute scientific role models for girls and young students. Since Geocharlas was launched in November 2018, more than 70 professionals have joined it, and more than 4000 people have attended its activities. Geocharlas audience includes people of diverse age and education: Primary, Secondary and High School students and adults of cultural associa- tions. Despite the good beginning, there are still areas of the national territory where Geocharlas has no presence or where the activity offer is very limited. Our challenge is to encourage more Geology professionals to join this outreach network. It is not loved (or demanded) what is not known and it is in our hands to be a reference point for those who demand a geology talk. It is our duty to facilitate access to scientific advances, regardless of age, gender or social status, mainly in a science as unknown as Geology. And we are already doing it during the 366 days of the year. This activity has the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Ministry of Science and Innovation.
