Resum
This study focuses on the problems and needs of teaching Spanish as a foreign languagein Senegal. Specifically, it explores teacher beliefs about educational processes in secondaryschool. We concentrate on relating these beliefs to teaching practice in the classroom among9 teachers of San Luis. We address aspects such as the skills worked on in the classroom, thetype of activities, the role of the teacher and the student, his training and his level of worksatisfaction. An ethnographic research was carried out, using as main instruments in depthand semi-structured interviews and participant observations. Data was analyzed using theGrounded Theory with the help of ATLAS.ti CAQDAS software, and interviews were related toclassroom observations. Data analysis shows the existence of discrepancies between teacherbeliefs and their practices, especially in the application of communicative approach andteacher-student roles, due to insufficient teacher training. The methodology applied byteachers was still traditional, based on the study of grammar, decontextualized memorizationand individual linguistic activities.
