Resumo

The administration of the same dose of a drug in different patients origins variability, both in the response (therapeutic or toxic effects) and in serum concentration to that drug. This report intends to make a brief bringing up about the profits of monitoring serum concentration in order to individualize dose. The determination of drug serum concentration has 3 main objectives: 1- Determine if the therapeutic response is adequate, and try to reach it as soon as possible. 2- Minimize non desired effects of drugs. 3- Proof the therapeutic accomplishment. The drugs that must be monitored through serum concentration determination are those having the following requirements: 1- have a very changeable dose-level relationship. 2- There is a good correlation among serum concentration and therapeutic or toxic effects. 3- Have a narrow therapeutic range. 4- It is difficult to know its effects. 5- Don’t produce any metabolite and , if they do, they are measurable. The indications to monitor are basically three: 1- Individualize dose 2- There is suspect of toxicity. 3- Control of accomplishment. The rules to make a correct monitoring are: - The sample must be obtained in the correct moment. - The kind of sample is correct. - The analytic determination complies the quality standards. - The results must be performed within the context of the patient and his pathology. - The suitable research must be emitted.
