Sustainable development goals

Abstract

During the settlement of Arabs in the Iberian Peninsula, Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived alongside one another. Consequently, this territorial sharing produced interchanges and mutual influences between these cultures—a phenomenon that was particularly prominent in the case of the widespread production of books in the area known as al-Andalus. Taking a multidisciplinary perspective, this study examines a group of Arabic manuscripts dated to between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. In contrast to the models identified to date, these examples present different formal and material elements that point to the existence of a method of bookmaking that was specific to this part of the Islamic–Arab world. We term this the ‘Andalusian’ binding model. The structures featured in this model have codicological characteristics that differ considerably from both traditional Arabic bindings and from those considered ‘Western’, yet reflect elements of each.
