Abstract

The scientific analysis of materials reached the field of cultural heritage as an essential tool to broaden knowledge in conservation and restoration. The main research on the analysis of materials in graphic documents is to identify supports and inks, the latter being the most demanded by historians, archivists and restorers. To this aim, our research group has adapted methodologies from the use of microdestructive techniques (HPLC, CE, SEM-EDX...) to non-invasive techniques (XRF, XRD, hyperspectral images...) to the study of documents dated from the 14th century. Excessively punctual analysis results or those carried out with only one analysis technique may lead to partial or erroneous statements. Thus, with the interpretation of the metadata, the importance of interdisciplinary work is demonstrated; the need to assess the samples with complementary techniques and the joint interpretation.
