Abstract

Chinese nouns do not specify grammatical number and gender information, which in Spanish is usually required and intrinsic to the noun. The prominent linguistic differences between Chinese and Spanish constantly challenge translators working in any direction of this language combination. The translation of certain features that are considered 6 grammatical but contain a referential and semantic load, such as gender and number, is a good example of these challenges. This thesis aims, firstly, to clarify the discretionary formulas in which Chinese language states information that Spanish tends to express through gender and number morphology. Secondly, we explore how translators interfere in the re-signification of texts when such information is not available. Our work uses a theoretical framework that starts with language typology and the ways it affects pragmatic, rhetorical and translational aspects. Based on this, and on the analysis of a corpus of seven contemporary Chinese stories and their respective translations into Spanish, we examine the different methods used by Chinese and Spanish to encode plurality and gender, with its coincidences and dissonances, as well as the mandatory role of translators as active creators of meaning.
