Resumo

The Paleozoic Villages Route is a geoturistic and educative travel through the Courel Mountains UNESCO Global Geopark in order to show the most relevant rocks of the Paleozoic bedrock and their uses in traditional architecture adapted to severe mountain conditions. The route comprises the visit to six selected traditional villages surrounded by native forests, in the form of short walks with a car as back up. In each village, one can visit dwellings and buildings related to food production: stables, watermills and constructions for drying chestnuts, which are included in the local gastronomy. Four main types of construction stone were quarried from the local Paleozoic bedrock. Each traditional construction highlights the art of dry-stone for walling, recently declared Immaterial Human Heritage by UNESCO.
