Resumo

The aim ofthis study is to access an "over-all" lifespan of dental restaurations and to analyse the cause of failures of restorative dentistry. A literature search was conducted by the authors, using the National Library of Medicine computerized bibliographic database, Medline, for the years 70- 95 to identify studies containing survival data ar cause of failures of dental restaurations. We have limited the present study to amalgam and composite restorations. A total of 34 publications was found containing durability data of dental restaurations. The calculated longevity of amalgam restaurations was 7-12 years and between 4.5-6.5 years for composite restaurations. The principal causes of failures were secondary caries and marginal filtration for both materials.
