Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the ejfectiveness of Cervitec®, a varnish with chlorhexidine l wt% and thymol 1 wt%, in the salivary reduction of mutans streptococci (MS) and Lactobacilli (L) up to six months. A quasi-experimental pretest-postest design with a test group (n = 35) and a control group (n = 31) was used in young adults. In the test group alL teeth and surfaces were vamished with Cervitec® three times (three weeks). In both groups, stimulated saliva samples were collected at baseline (S1), and two weeks (S2), one month (S3), four months (S4) and six months (S5) afler the varnish application. Dentocult SM strip® and Dentocult LB® were used for MS and L, respectively. At baseline (S1) there were no significan! differences between test and controls in neither MS (p = 0.214) nor L(p = 0.311). in the test group, when compared with the baseline (SJ) there was a significant reduction in MS up to 4 months, and in L up to 1 month. In the control group, there were no significan! changes in neither MS nor L during the study.
