Zusammenfassung

Due to the fact that the number of women prisoners has traditionally been lower than of men, studies on prisons in Spain only began to pay attention to the specificities of the female prison population from the 1990s onwards. Since then, several studies have addressed the socio-economic profile of female prisoners and numerous reports and research studies have pointed out the discrimination suffered by women in the Spanish prison system. The aim of this literature review is to show the different types of discrimination suffered by women prisoners and which make their conditions of serving their sentences harsher than those of men. In addition, it also asks whether women perceive it this way. Are there differences in the perception of quality of life of prisoners during their imprisonment according to sex? The importance of this literature review is that it highlights the need to understand the perceptions that both male and female prisoners have of their prison quality of life. Poorer quality of life in prison is associated with higher rates of recidivism after release, so understanding perceptions of quality of prison life provides authorities with the tools to take appropriate measures to improve prison conditions if necessary, particularly in the light of gender differences.
