Abstract
Flood syndrome is a rare pathology, with no clearly described prevalence, that occurs as a complication of umbilical hernia in cirrhotic patients with ascites. It consists of the rupture of the hernial sac into the skin and the outflow of ascitic fluid through it. It is usually related to the degree of liver disease, being more frequent in patients with refractory ascites and advanced liver disease. Its importance lies in its high mortality, close to 50%, the risk of complications, such as secondary bacterial peritonitis, and the absence of an established management algorithm. We present the case of a cirrhotic patient with refractory ascites and umbilical hernia, with spontaneous outflow of ascitic fluid through the umbilical hernia. Despite the initial good response to conservative treatment and reduction of intra-abdominal pressure, the patient's condition progressively deteriorated and he died, which shows the seriousness of this condition.
